Ordinary Archive privacy policy
Ordinary Archive is a local-first multimedia journal. By default, journal entries, media, transcripts, tags, places, settings, and generated insights stay on the device.
What the app processes
You may create writing, audio, video, photos, tags, places, weather context, wellness notes, and interview responses. The app uses that material to show and organize the journal, provide search and export, and power optional on-device reflection features.
Permissions and optional services
Microphone, camera, photos/media, notifications, foreground location, Bluetooth, and nearby Wi-Fi are requested only when a feature needs them. Background location, contacts, call logs, SMS, and advertising identifiers are not used. Foreground location can add a place or request weather; turning it off stops future requests.
When you request weather, the needed coordinates go to Open-Meteo. When you use the optional trip map, a selected area goes to OpenSky for nearby public aircraft positions. Journal text, media, account identifiers, and advertising identifiers are not sent with those requests.
AI and transcription
Gemma and Moonshine processing is delivered for on-device use. The current public Android configuration does not enable a cloud AI endpoint. If a later release offers a cloud AI action, it will remain off by default, require explicit consent and a user-requested action, and this policy and the Play data-safety form will be updated before release.
If you report an AI-generated insight, the app removes it locally and may send only a random report ID, time, insight type/source, confidence, report reason, and app version. Reports never include journal text, transcripts, media, file paths, insight titles, or location coordinates.
Encrypted backup and sync
Optional Google Drive, iCloud, and HTTPS WebDAV backups use an encrypted archive prepared on the device. Your selected provider receives the encrypted bundle. WebDAV credentials and the recovery passphrase remain in device-protected storage; Ordinary Archive cannot recover the passphrase for you.
Data controls
You can delete entries, media, the Private Memory Index, and all local app data in Settings. You can also export an encrypted archive. See the data deletion page for provider-specific cleanup guidance.
Contact
Use the support form for privacy questions. Do not send journal contents, recovery phrases, or private media.
